Carl Tart is being recognized for mature facility with digital/visual rhetoric. Tart’s WordPress site is constructed with a clear mission: to educate all members of university communities about the issue of racial micro-aggressions and help prevent their presence on their campuses. The site includes an excellent balance of images and text with relevant links and videos.
Reflecting on the project, Tart discusses his inspiration and his process:
I was inspired to develop Project E.M.P.O.W.E.R. into a website dedicated to educating college students (especially minorities who attend predominantly white institutions) of racial micro-aggressions and what they can do to eliminate the presence of racial micro-aggressions on their campuses. E.M.P.O.W.E.R. is an acronym I created that represents the main mission of the project, which is “Enhancing Minority Performance and Optimism While Eliminating Racism.” The main focus of Project E.M.P.O.W.E.R. is to encourage college campuses to become more aware of the effects words can have on their students, especially if those words are used in a derogatory way whether aware or not.
I used . . . three rhetorical [appeals] when developing the plan of how I was going to reach my audience. My use of ethos is evident throughout the website as it is targeting college students. My use of logos can be seen . . . on both pages titled “the issue” and “my campus.” I also attempt to use logos on the “tips and suggestions” page as I provide information as to how the readers could limit the effect of racial micro-aggressions on their campuses. I also use pathos with the personal testimony provided on my “about me” page.
